Phosphate is a key macronutrient for corals, especially stony corals, and an antagonist to nitrogen among the macronutrients. Phosphate is more likely to have a brightening effect on coral colors and makes the pocilloporin pigments in blue and pink glow.

The phosphate-stimulated growth of stony corals provides significant advantages compared to algae and cyanobacteria. Iron and nitrogen concentrations in the water are effectively reduced. This means that a good phosphate supply with concentration levels of around 0.1 mg/l (ppm) will tend to inhibit the effect on the growth of algae and cyanobacteria. It is found in the sea in concentration levels of 0.02-0.04 mg/l (ppm). More important than the value itself is its stability.
