The South American Lungfish is one of the most unusual freshwater fish species in the world. Native to South America, it is capable of breathing atmospheric air using true lungs and can survive in oxygen-poor environments.

Young specimens are fascinating aquarium fish, but they eventually grow into very large predators requiring extremely spacious aquariums.

Care Requirements

  • Size: up to 100–125 cm
  • Temperature: 24–30 °C
  • pH: 6.0–8.0
  • Minimum aquarium size: at least 1000 litres for adults
  • Difficulty: Intermediate

Feeding

A carnivorous species that readily accepts:

  • Shrimp
  • Mussels
  • Worms
  • Frozen foods
  • Large carnivore pellets

Important Notes

This species regularly surfaces to breathe air and must always have access to the water surface. Although sold as relatively small juveniles, lungfish can eventually reach impressive sizes and require very large aquariums.

A truly unique species for aquarists looking to keep one of the world's most extraordinary freshwater fish.

Akvaariokeidas is a Finnish aquarium specialist store. We are happy to help you choose the right species and equipment.
