Four-eyed Fish (Anableps anableps) wild 6-10 cm
The Four-eyed Fish is one of the most unusual fish species available in the aquarium hobby. Its eyes are uniquely divided, allowing it to see both above and below the water surface at the same time. This remarkable adaptation helps the fish detect food and predators in its natural environment.
In the wild, Four-eyed Fish inhabit estuaries, mangrove areas, and coastal brackish waters of South America. They spend most of their time close to the water surface.
Care Requirements
- Size: 20–30 cm
- Temperature: 24–30 °C
- pH: 7.0–8.5
- Water type: Brackish water
- Minimum aquarium size: at least 300 liters
- Difficulty: Intermediate
Behavior
Four-eyed Fish are peaceful, social fish that should be kept in groups. They spend nearly all of their time near the surface and require plenty of open swimming space. The aquarium must be securely covered, as these fish are excellent jumpers.
Feeding
They readily accept:
- Insects and insect larvae
- Frozen foods
- Shrimp
- Small crustaceans
- Quality flakes and pellets
Important Notes
A large surface area is more important than aquarium height. Four-eyed Fish thrive in spacious brackish-water aquariums and are particularly well suited to mangrove or estuary-themed setups.
