The Mudskipper is one of the most unusual fish species found in the aquarium hobby. This brackish water species spends much of its time out of the water, moving across mud, rocks, and roots with the help of its strong pectoral fins. It is best suited to a specially designed paludarium or shallow brackish-water aquarium with a large terrestrial area.

Mudskippers are active, intelligent, and fascinating animals to observe. They constantly explore their surroundings, defend territories, and spend considerable time on land rather than swimming.

Care Requirements

  • Size: up to 25 cm
  • Temperature: 25–29 °C
  • pH: 7.5–8.5
  • Water type: Brackish water
  • Minimum aquarium size: at least 200 liters, preferably a spacious paludarium
  • Difficulty: Intermediate to advanced

Feeding

Mudskippers are carnivorous and readily accept:

  • Insects and insect larvae
  • Shrimp
  • Crustaceans
  • Frozen foods
  • Other meaty foods

Important Notes

Mudskippers must always have access to land areas above the water surface. The enclosure should provide plenty of hiding places, climbing structures, and dry resting areas. As skilled climbers, they require a securely covered aquarium or paludarium.

Mudskippers can be territorial, especially towards members of their own species. They are not suitable for a typical freshwater community aquarium and require a specialized brackish-water setup.

A unique and highly rewarding species for hobbyists interested in creating a mangrove or tidal-zone biotope.
