The coarse blue filter foam removes larger suspended particles before the water reaches finer filtration media. Its open-cell structure also provides colonisation area for beneficial bacteria, allowing the material to support biological filtration after it has matured.

The three-centimetre thickness provides effective coarse filtration without requiring as much installation space as thicker five- or ten-centimetre foam sheets.

Directions

1. Measure the internal dimensions of the filter chamber.
2. Mark the required shape on the foam.
3. Cut the material with a long, sharp knife.
4. Make the piece slightly larger than the opening to prevent water bypass.
5. Rinse the new foam before use.
6. Install it without excessive compression.
7. Position it before finer filter media in the direction of water flow.
8. Check that water passes evenly through the foam.
9. Clean the material when flow begins to decrease.
10. Rinse biologically established foam in removed aquarium water.
11. Replace the foam when it becomes brittle, damaged or permanently compressed.
