Hobby Filter Sponge, coarse black 50 x 50 x 2 cm, PPI 10

The coarse black filter foam removes larger suspended particles before the water reaches finer filtration media. Its open-cell construction also provides colonisation area for beneficial microorganisms and supports biological filtration after maturation.

The two-centimetre thickness is particularly useful in shallow filter chambers, filter baskets and layered filtration arrangements where installation space is limited. Its black colour remains discreet in visible filter compartments and around pump intakes.

Directions

1. Measure the internal dimensions of the filter chamber.
2. Mark the required shape on the foam.
3. Cut the material with a long, sharp knife or scissors.
4. Make the piece slightly larger than the filter opening.
5. Rinse the new foam before use.
6. Install it without excessive compression.
7. Prevent water from bypassing the edges.
8. Position the coarse foam before finer filter media.
9. Check that water passes evenly through the material.
10. Clean the foam when water flow begins to decrease.
11. Rinse established biological foam in removed aquarium water.
12. Replace the material when it becomes brittle, damaged or permanently compressed.
