eSHa alx is an effective treatment for external parasitic crustaceans affecting fish. It targets fish lice, anchor worms, gill lice, and related parasites found on the skin, inside the tissue, and on the gills. The treatment is suitable for freshwater aquariums and ponds and can be used for marine fish in a separate quarantine aquarium. Shrimp, crayfish, and other sensitive invertebrates must be removed before treatment.

eSHa alx is a fish treatment developed to control parasitic crustaceans. These external parasites may attach to the skin, fins, underlying tissue, and gills. An infection can cause severe irritation, damaged skin, breathing difficulties, and a gradual decline in fish condition.

The treatment targets fish lice belonging to the Argulus genus, anchor worms belonging to the Lernaea genus, and gill lice such as Ergasilus. It can also be used against other related parasitic crustaceans under the conditions described in the product instructions.

Fish lice are flat, rounded parasites that attach to the fish and feed on tissue fluids. Larger individuals may be visible to the naked eye as thin, disc shaped organisms on the skin. Fish lice can move across the body and spread between fish.

Despite their common name, anchor worms are parasitic crustaceans rather than true worms. The female parasite anchors deep inside the tissue while a thread like section remains visible outside the fish. The attachment point may become red, swollen, and inflamed. Damaged tissue is also vulnerable to secondary bacterial and fungal infections.

Gill lice attach to the gills and may interfere with normal breathing. An affected fish may breathe rapidly, hold its gill covers open, or remain near the water surface and areas with strong circulation. A serious infection can significantly reduce oxygen uptake and weaken the fish.

Possible signs of parasitic crustaceans include rubbing against aquarium or pond surfaces, restless swimming, increased mucus production, red skin, small bleeding wounds, damaged fins, and reduced appetite. Secondary inflammation may develop around the parasite attachment points.

eSHa alx is added directly to the treatment water. It is suitable for freshwater aquariums and ponds. Marine fish can be treated in a separate quarantine aquarium that does not contain corals, anemones, shrimp, crayfish, crabs, snails, clams, sea urchins, or other invertebrates.

The treatment also affects non parasitic crustaceans. All shrimp and crayfish must be removed before dosing. Snails, clams, corals, anemones, and other sensitive invertebrates should also be removed, or the affected fish should be transferred to a suitable treatment aquarium.

Plants and biological filtration normally tolerate the treatment when it is used correctly. Activated carbon, zeolite, ion exchange resins, and other media that may absorb the treatment should be removed. Ultraviolet sterilizers, ozone generators, and equipment that may break down the active ingredients should be switched off.

The life cycle of parasitic crustaceans may include stages living on the fish, stages moving freely through the water, and eggs remaining on aquarium surfaces. Accurate treatment timing and any required repeat dose are therefore important. Substrate cleaning and removal of organic waste help reduce developing parasite stages in the aquarium or pond.

  • Targets gill lice
  • Suitable for freshwater aquariums
  • Suitable for ponds
  • Suitable for marine fish in quarantine aquariums
  • Added directly to the treatment water
  • Normally well tolerated by plants and biological filters

Applications

eSHa alx may be suitable when fish show signs including:

  • Visible flat parasites on the skin
  • Thread like parasites protruding from the body
  • Parasites or damage around the gills
  • Rubbing against rocks, wood, or other surfaces
  • Severe restlessness
  • Increased mucus production
  • Red or bleeding attachment points
  • Small ulcers on the skin
  • Ragged or damaged fins
  • Rapid or difficult breathing
  • Remaining near the water surface or strong circulation
  • Reduced appetite and declining condition

Similar signs can also be caused by other parasites, poor water quality, and bacterial infections. Examine the fish carefully and check the water parameters before treatment.

Dosage and use

Always dose eSHa alx according to the current instructions supplied with the product. Calculate the dose using the actual water volume. Substrate, rocks, wood, decorations, and equipment reduce the amount of water inside an aquarium.

  1. Identify the parasite whenever possible.
  2. Calculate the actual water volume of the aquarium, pond, or treatment tank.
  3. Remove all shrimp and crayfish before treatment.
  4. Move snails, clams, and other sensitive invertebrates to a safe untreated aquarium.
  5. Treat marine fish in a separate quarantine aquarium.
  6. Remove activated carbon and other treatment absorbing media.
  7. Switch off ultraviolet sterilizers and ozone generators.
  8. Keep biological filtration and water circulation operating.
  9. Maintain adequate oxygenation throughout treatment.
  10. Shake the bottle before dosing.
  11. Dose accurately according to the package instructions.
  12. Clean the substrate and remove visible parasites and organic waste.
  13. Apply a repeat treatment at the instructed time if required.

Do not exceed the recommended dosage or extend the treatment without specific guidance. Do not combine eSHa alx with other treatments unless compatibility has been confirmed. Do not use the product on animals intended for human consumption.
