Korallen-Zucht ZEOvit Zeolite Media
Korallen-Zucht ZEOvit is a carefully selected blend of natural zeolites for marine and reef aquariums. Together with ZEObak bacterial cultures and the ZEOstart carbon source, it forms the foundation of the Korallen-Zucht ZEOvit method.
The method is designed to support low-nutrient conditions similar to those found on natural coral reefs. Controlled nutrient levels can promote natural SPS coral coloration, healthy tissue, and balanced skeletal growth.
The material is placed inside a suitable ZEOvit reactor. Water should flow evenly from the bottom upwards through the media. The media is moved daily to remove accumulated detritus and bacterial biomass.
Biological nutrient management
The ZEOvit method combines zeolite media, selected bacteria, a controlled carbon source, and efficient protein skimming.
ZEObak introduces bacterial cultures, while ZEOstart provides a carbon source. The bacterial community processes nutrients and organic compounds. Bacterial biomass and captured nutrients are removed through protein skimming.
Some of the fine bacterial material released from the reactor may also provide food for corals and other filter-feeding reef organisms.
Nitrate and phosphate control
The objective is not to reduce nutrients as rapidly as possible. ZEOvit is intended to establish stable, controlled low-nutrient conditions.
Rapid reductions in nitrate and phosphate may stress corals, especially in established aquariums that have operated at higher nutrient concentrations.
When converting an existing aquarium, begin with a reduced quantity of media and conservative flow when necessary. Increase the system gradually according to water measurements and coral response.
Daily media cleaning
In a manual ZEOvit reactor, move the cleaning rod up and down several times each day. This releases detritus and bacterial biomass and prevents the media from compacting.
Daily cleaning:
- maintains consistent water flow
- reduces media compaction
- removes accumulated detritus
- releases bacterial biomass
- supports efficient reactor operation
Automatic reactors move the media according to their programmed schedule.
Flow rate
Maximum recommended flow:
400 litres per hour for each litre of ZEOvit media.
Excessive flow may make the system act too aggressively. Reduced flow can be appropriate during the transition of an established aquarium to the ZEOvit method.
Media replacement
Replace the media approximately every 6–8 weeks. The exact interval depends on aquarium load, flow rate, dosing, and nutrient conditions.
Partial replacement may provide a smoother transition than replacing the entire media quantity at once.
Rinse new media with clean water before placing it inside the reactor.
