Monetaria moneta and Monetaria annulus are small, peaceful cowries sold under the shared Money Cowrie name. They graze microalgae, biofilm and detritus from rockwork and aquarium surfaces and can form part of the clean-up crew in an established marine or reef aquarium. Monetaria annulus usually has a distinctive golden ring, while Monetaria moneta has a flatter, paler shell. These primarily nocturnal snails require stable water conditions, mature grazing surfaces and supplemental algae food when natural growth becomes limited.
Money Cowrie may refer to Monetaria moneta, Monetaria annulus or visually similar specimens from these closely related species. Both belong to the cowrie family Cypraeidae and originate from tropical Indo-Pacific marine environments.
The smooth, polished shell may be partly or completely covered by the living animal’s mantle. This mantle cleans the shell and produces the glossy surface characteristic of cowries.

Feeding
Provide an established aquarium with mature live rock and natural biofilm. When natural algae become scarce, supplement with:
- Dried nori seaweed
- Marine algae sheets
- Spirulina-based sinking tablets
- Algae-based invertebrate foods
- Mature biofilm-covered rock
Offer supplemental food after the aquarium lights dim and remove uneaten food the following morning.
Introduction
- Confirm that the aquarium is fully established.
- Check that sufficient grazing surfaces are available.
- Measure temperature and salinity.
- Dim the aquarium lighting.
- Equalise the transport-water temperature.
- Acclimate slowly to salinity and water chemistry.
- Never pull the cowrie from the transport container.
- Transfer it underwater with its substrate or a small container.
- Place it onto stable, biofilm-covered rock.
- Confirm that the muscular foot attaches securely.
- Observe activity after the aquarium lights switch off.
- Supplement with algae food when the aquarium is exceptionally clean.
- Avoid all copper-based medications.
