Hexabranchus sanguineus, commonly known as the Spanish Dancer, is one of the largest and most spectacular nudibranchs in the world. Its red, orange, pink and white patterned body commonly reaches 20–40 cm and may exceptionally grow to approximately 60 cm. When disturbed, the animal can release its grip and swim by undulating its broad mantle edges, resembling a swirling flamenco skirt. This peaceful but extremely demanding sponge feeder is suitable only for large, established specialist aquariums with a continuous supply of suitable food sponges.
The Spanish Dancer is a shell-less marine gastropod belonging to the family Hexabranchidae. Its broad mantle normally curls upward around the outer edge while the animal crawls across the reef.
Two retractile rhinophores are located at the front, while six separately retractile, feather-like gill plumes form the dorsal gill structure near the rear.

Feeding
Identify the sponge consumed by the individual before purchase. Maintain a continuous supply of the same or another confirmed food sponge and replace the food source before it is completely consumed.
Ordinary fish food, frozen seafood, coral powders, phytoplankton, zooplankton and algae sheets do not reliably replace the natural sponge diet.
Introduction
- Protect all pump and overflow intakes.
- Confirm that suitable sponge food is available.
- Dim the aquarium lighting.
- Equalise the transport-water temperature.
- Acclimate gradually to salinity and water chemistry.
- Maintain temperature and oxygenation during acclimation.
- Avoid unnecessary exposure to air.
- Do not handle the animal with bare hands.
- Transfer it underwater in a sufficiently large container.
- Place it onto stable rock beside the identified food sponge.
- Temporarily reduce strong water flow.
- Confirm that the muscular foot attaches securely.
- Monitor feeding, movement and body condition closely.
- Avoid all copper-based medications.
