The sand has been sifted, so impurities are removed and the grain size is even.

Why the colour matters: deserts are not all the same colour. This shade corresponds to the sand of the Australian deserts, the Namib and the Kalahari (Africa), the Spiny Desert (Madagascar) and the Sonoran (North America). A colour that matches the species' own habitat makes the terrarium convincing and shows the animal's colouring properly.

The sand conducts heat well, so it works with a heat mat. It encourages digging and also serves as an egg-laying substrate.

Desert species are adapted to strong UV radiation as well: a desert terrarium needs a light source to match, such as the Exo Terra Reptile UVB150.
