Tunze Comline® DOC Skimmer 9001
Tunze Comline DOC Skimmer 9001 is a compact internal protein skimmer developed for small marine and reef aquariums. It installs directly inside the display aquarium or a compatible filtration chamber, eliminating the need for a separate sump, external feed pump, or complicated plumbing.
The protein skimmer removes dissolved organic compounds before they break down into nitrate and phosphate. Fish waste, uneaten food, coral mucus, and decomposing material continuously increase the organic load. Regular skimming supports clear water and more stable nutrient levels.
Effective surface suction
Comline DOC Skimmer 9001 draws water directly from the aquarium surface. Surface suction helps remove the oily protein film that may reduce gas exchange and restrict light penetration.
Organic compounds, dust, and other contaminants frequently accumulate at the surface. Directing this water into the protein skimmer allows these substances to be removed before they disperse through the aquarium.
Correct installation height is essential. Position the upper intake so that surface water flows steadily into the skimmer.
Flash Skimming principle
Tunze Comline DOC Skimmer 9001 operates according to the Flash Skimming principle. The TUNZE Foamer mixes organic-rich surface water with large quantities of extremely fine air bubbles.
Proteins, cellulose, dead cells, and other dissolved organic matter attach to the bubble surfaces. The air and water mixture expands and stabilizes inside the collection-cup reactor before the contaminant-rich foam rises into the cup.
Cleaned water returns directly to the aquarium without additional plumbing. The rapid process helps prevent adsorbed substances from being released from the bubbles and returning to the aquarium water.
Patented overfoaming protection
A patented Anti-Overfoaming System intermediate chamber helps prevent uncontrolled foam production. It regulates skimming performance according to water level and organic load.
Water conditioners, coral adhesives, aquarium additives, oily foods, and maintenance procedures may temporarily change foam production. The protection system reduces the risk of rapid cup overflow, although the collection cup should still be monitored after introducing new products.
Quiet and energy-efficient operation
The skimmer produces approximately 100 litres of air per hour while consuming only 2.5 W. Its low power consumption makes it economical for continuous operation.
Compact construction, silenced air intake, and silicone vibration damping help reduce noise transmission to the aquarium glass. When installed correctly, the skimmer is suitable for nano aquariums located in living rooms and offices.
Compact nano-aquarium solution
Comline DOC Skimmer 9001 requires only a 110 × 63 mm footprint. Its black housing blends discreetly into a dark aquarium background and minimizes visible equipment.
The total height is 215 mm. Sufficient clearance must be provided above the unit to remove and clean the 0.2-litre collection cup.
The included Magnet Holder is suitable for aquarium glass up to 10 mm thick. Magnetic attachment makes installation, height adjustment, removal, and maintenance convenient.
Aquarium sizing
The recommended operating range of 20–140 litres depends on biological load and livestock sensitivity.
- Soft corals, leather corals, and anemones: up to approximately 140 l
- LPS corals and mixed reefs: up to approximately 84 l
- SPS-dominated reefs: up to approximately 56 l
- Heavily stocked SPS reefs: up to approximately 42 l
These recommendations are approximate. A large fish population, intensive feeding, and high organic load reduce the practical maximum capacity. Sensitive or heavily stocked reef aquariums benefit from a more conservatively sized skimmer.

Installation and setup
- Select an area with a stable water level.
- Provide at least 110 × 63 mm of installation space.
- Leave enough clearance above the unit to remove the collection cup.
- Attach the skimmer with the included Magnet Holder.
- Set the immersion depth to approximately 135–155 mm.
- Confirm that surface water flows steadily into the intake.
- Keep the air intake free from salt and mineral deposits.
- Position the plug and electrical connections in a dry location.
- Create a drip loop in the power cable.
- Start the skimmer and monitor foam production during the first days.
- Check the collection cup after using aquarium additives.
- Clean the cup and foam riser regularly.
- Maintain the pump, air intake, and impeller chamber according to the instructions.
- Disconnect the equipment before maintenance or placing hands in the aquarium.
A new protein skimmer usually requires a short running-in period. Foam production may be inconsistent, and a limited number of microbubbles may appear during the first days. Performance normally stabilizes after a natural biofilm develops inside the unit.
