Tunze DOC Skimmer 9460
Tunze DOC Skimmer 9460 is a high-capacity protein skimmer for demanding marine and reef aquarium systems. It is designed to remove large quantities of dissolved organic compounds in systems where heavy fish stocking, intensive feeding, or sensitive corals require powerful continuous skimming.
The skimmer is installed inside a sump. Its compact construction combines high air performance and effective water circulation. Hydrofoamer Silence 9460.040 supplies both the air and water movement required by the reaction chamber.
Fine air bubbles attract proteins, fats, and other dissolved organic compounds. The bubbles transport waste through the foam reactor and into the large collection cup. Removing organic material before decomposition helps limit nitrate and phosphate formation while supporting clear, oxygen-rich water.
High skimming capacity
DOC Skimmer 9460 provides more than 5,000 l/h of air performance and approximately 3,500 l/h of water flow. The extensive air-to-water contact area supports effective organic waste removal from heavily loaded systems.
The skimmer is suitable for:
- Large reef aquariums
- Heavily stocked marine fish systems
- Coral propagation systems
- Marine aquarium retail systems
- Public display aquariums
- Central filtration systems
- Professional breeding and quarantine installations
Hydrofoamer Silence 9460.040
The included Hydrofoamer Silence provides air production and circulation through the skimmer. It is designed for high output with controlled operating noise.
Power consumption is approximately 58 W at 230 V and 50 Hz. Regular cleaning of the pump, impeller, and air intake maintains performance and quiet operation.
Stable foam production
An internal mixing cylinder stabilizes the rising bubbles inside the skimmer and supports a consistent foam column. The internal construction separates air bubbles from the outlet water, helping reduce microbubbles returning to the aquarium.
A new skimmer normally requires a running-in period. Water conditioners, coral adhesives, new filter media, oils, and additives may temporarily alter foam production.
Anti Overfoaming System
The integrated Anti Overfoaming System helps control sudden excessive foam production. This reduces the risk of uncontrolled collection cup overflow after changes in water surface tension.
Skimmer operation should still be monitored closely after maintenance, water changes, and the use of aquarium additives.
Seven-litre collection cup
The collection cup has a capacity of seven litres. The large volume provides suitable capacity for powerful commercial-grade skimming.
The cup and lid measure 320 mm in diameter and 259 mm in height. At least 63 mm of additional clearance is required above the skimmer to remove the cup.
Clean the cup neck and foam riser regularly. Organic deposits restrict foam movement and gradually reduce performance.
Flexible sump depth
The recommended immersion depth is 150–250 mm. No separate water-level adjustment is required within this range.
The most stable performance is achieved in a sump chamber with a constant water level. An automatic top-off system helps prevent variations caused by evaporation.
Aquarium sizing
The nominal maximum recommendation is 6,000 litres. Practical capacity depends on coral sensitivity and biological load.
Approximate maximum recommendations:
- Soft corals, long-polyp corals, and anemones: approximately 6,000 l
- LPS and mixed reefs: approximately 3,600 l
- SPS-dominated reefs: approximately 2,400 l
- Heavily stocked SPS reefs: approximately 1,800 l
Intensive feeding and high fish stocking require more conservative sizing.
Ozone compatibility
DOC Skimmer 9460 can be connected to a suitable ozone system according to the operating instructions. Ozone can support water clarification and redox management.
Ozone must be dosed carefully with suitable monitoring and compatible equipment. Exhaust air and processed water may require activated-carbon treatment.
