Tunze Comline DOC Skimmer 9001 DC is an internal protein skimmer developed for small marine and reef aquariums. It removes dissolved organic compounds before they break down into nitrate and phosphate while supporting gas exchange and oxygenation.

Its compact Comline construction is particularly suitable for aquariums without a separate filtration sump. The included Magnet Holder attaches the skimmer to the rear or side glass and is suitable for aquarium glass up to 10 mm thick.

Fine air bubbles attract proteins, fats, and other organic compounds. These substances are transported with the foam into the removable collection cup. Removing organic material before mineralization helps reduce nutrient accumulation.

Adjustable DC pump

The electronically adjustable pump allows skimming performance to be matched to aquarium load, livestock, and feeding. The Turbelle Controller provides convenient power adjustment without dismantling the skimmer.

Air performance is approximately 150 l/h. Normal power consumption is approximately 5 W, with a maximum of 8 W. The skimmer operates at 12 V and includes a 100–240 V, 50–60 Hz power supply.

Adjustable output simplifies initial setup. The skimmer can begin at moderate output and be increased gradually after stable foam production develops.

Surface intake

The Comline design draws water from the aquarium surface and helps remove protein and oil films. A clean and moving surface supports gas exchange and light penetration.

The recommended immersion depth is approximately 135–155 mm. Correct installation height and a stable aquarium water level are essential for consistent performance.

Compact construction

The skimmer measures only 110 × 63 × 215 mm. Its narrow footprint leaves valuable display space available for fish, coral, and reef structures.

Magnetic mounting allows accurate height adjustment and convenient removal for maintenance.

Collection cup and maintenance

The removable collection cup has a capacity of 0.2 litres and also contains the foam reactor. Clean the cup and neck regularly to prevent organic deposits from reducing foam production.

The pump impeller, impeller chamber, air intake, and silencer should also be cleaned regularly. Salt, calcium, and organic deposits may restrict the air supply and increase operating noise.

Aquarium sizing

Tunze recommends Comline DOC Skimmer 9001 DC for marine aquariums from 20 to 160 litres, depending on biological load.

Approximate maximum recommendations:

  • Soft coral and anemone aquariums: approximately 160 litres
  • LPS and mixed reefs: approximately 96 litres
  • SPS-dominated reefs: approximately 64 litres
  • Heavily stocked SPS reefs: approximately 48 litres

Actual suitability depends on livestock, feeding, coral sensitivity, water changes, and additional nutrient-export methods.

Installation and setup

  1. Select a suitable position on the rear or side glass.
  2. Confirm that the aquarium glass is no more than 10 mm thick.
  3. Ensure an immersion depth of approximately 135–155 mm.
  4. Attach the skimmer with the Magnet Holder.
  5. Adjust the skimmer correctly in relation to the waterline.
  6. Keep the surface intake openings unobstructed.
  7. Position the power supply and controller in a dry location.
  8. Create a drip loop in the power cable.
  9. Begin operation at a moderate output.
  10. Increase performance gradually according to foam production.
  11. Monitor the collection cup closely during initial operation.
  12. Adjust the skimmer according to the collected waste.
  13. Clean the collection cup and foam riser regularly.
  14. Maintain the air intake, silencer, pump, and impeller.
  15. Disconnect the equipment before maintenance.

A new protein skimmer normally requires a running-in period. Water conditioners, coral adhesives, oils, and additives affecting surface tension may temporarily alter foam production.
