Tunze Comline® DOC Skimmer 9012 DC
Tunze Comline DOC Skimmer 9012 DC is an electronically adjustable internal protein skimmer for marine and reef aquariums. It combines efficient removal of dissolved organic compounds, surface water intake, and compact construction in one easily installed unit.
The skimmer is particularly suitable for marine aquariums without a separate sump. It mounts directly to the aquarium glass with the included Silence Magnet Holder. External plumbing, drilled connections, and a separate filtration sump are not required.
Comline DOC Skimmer 9012 DC removes dissolved organic compounds before they break down into nitrate and phosphate. Fine air bubbles attract proteins, fats, and other organic substances and transport them into the collection cup.
Removing organic waste supports clear water, effective gas exchange, and more stable nutrient conditions for marine fish, corals, and other aquarium inhabitants.
Updated TUNZE HUB EDITION
The updated 9012 DC HUB EDITION is quieter and more energy efficient than the previous model. It operates at a safety extra-low voltage of 12 V and consumes approximately 9 W.
The included WiFi Turbelle Controller 7020.500 allows skimming performance to be adjusted according to aquarium load, feeding, and foam production.
Adjustable operation simplifies startup. The skimmer can initially operate at a moderate setting and be increased gradually after foam production becomes stable. Output can also be reduced temporarily following feeding, coral adhesive use, or the addition of water-treatment products.
Effective surface intake
The Comline design collects water directly from the aquarium surface. Surface intake helps remove protein and oil films that may interfere with gas exchange and light penetration.
A clean and moving surface improves oxygen transfer and carbon dioxide release. Surface skimming also transports organic compounds efficiently into the skimmer before they decompose.
Correct installation height is essential. The upper intake openings must be positioned according to the instructions in relation to the aquarium waterline.
Quiet and energy-efficient operation
The updated pump and Silence Magnet Holder reduce vibration transferred to the aquarium glass. This makes Comline DOC Skimmer 9012 DC suitable for living rooms, offices, and other areas where quiet operation is important.
Power consumption is approximately 9 W. The energy-efficient design is suitable for continuous operation.
Air performance is approximately 400 l/h. Effective mixing of air and water removes dissolved organic compounds while supporting gas exchange and oxygenation.
Compact internal installation
The skimmer measures only 140 × 110 × 415 mm. Its narrow footprint allows installation on the rear or side glass without occupying excessive aquarium space.
The Silence Magnet Holder is suitable for aquarium glass up to 15 mm thick. Magnetic mounting provides precise height adjustment and makes removing the skimmer for maintenance straightforward.
The required immersion depth is approximately 255–285 mm. Confirm aquarium dimensions and operating water level before ordering.
Collection cup and Foam Extraction Unit
The standard collection cup captures the organic waste removed through protein skimming. Its capacity is 0.7 litres, and it can be lifted out for emptying and cleaning.
Clean the neck of the collection cup regularly. Organic deposits restrict smooth foam movement and gradually reduce skimming efficiency.
Comline DOC Skimmer 9012 DC is compatible with the separately available Foam Extraction Unit 9020.140. This accessory transfers skimmate into an external container and supports automatic cup cleaning. It is useful during holidays and in systems producing large amounts of waste.
Aquarium sizing
The updated HUB EDITION is recommended for marine aquariums from 300 to 1,000 litres. The practical maximum volume depends on biological load and coral sensitivity.
Approximate maximum recommendations:
- Soft corals, long-polyp corals, and anemones: up to approximately 1,000 litres
- LPS and mixed reef aquariums: up to approximately 600 litres
- SPS-dominated reef aquariums: up to approximately 400 litres
- Heavily stocked SPS aquariums: up to approximately 300 litres
Heavy fish stocking, intensive feeding, and elevated nutrient loads require more conservative sizing. Water changes, biological filtration, refugium capacity, and other nutrient-export methods also affect the final recommendation.

Installation and setup
- Select a suitable location on the rear or side glass.
- Confirm that the aquarium glass is no more than 15 mm thick.
- Confirm an immersion depth of approximately 255–285 mm.
- Install the internal and external magnets according to the instructions.
- Adjust the skimmer to the correct height.
- Keep the surface intake openings unobstructed.
- Position the power supply and controller in a dry location.
- Create a drip loop in the power cable.
- Begin operation at a moderate output.
- Increase performance gradually according to foam production.
- Monitor the collection cup during the first days.
- Clean the collection cup and neck regularly.
- Maintain the air intake, pump, and impeller chamber according to the instructions.
- Disconnect the equipment before maintenance or placing hands in the aquarium.
A new protein skimmer normally requires a running-in period before stable foam production develops. Water conditioners, coral adhesives, additives, oils, and other substances affecting surface tension may temporarily alter skimmer performance.
