Chelidonura varians, commonly known as the Neon Slug, Blue Velvet Slug or Blue Velvet Headshield Slug, is a striking black sea slug marked with electric-blue lines. It is a specialised predator of selected small flatworms and is commonly used for the biological control of red planaria in marine and reef aquariums. The slug is peaceful and does not normally consume corals, but it depends entirely on a continuous supply of suitable flatworms. Once the prey population is eliminated, the animal may quickly starve.
The broad head shield, dark body, brilliant blue pattern and two elongated posterior tails make Chelidonura varians easy to recognise. The animal follows chemical trails produced by flatworms and consumes its prey with a suction-like proboscis.
Neon Slug is not a general clean-up-crew animal. It does not graze algae or accept ordinary fish, coral or invertebrate foods. It should be introduced only to an established aquarium containing a confirmed population of suitable flatworms.

Flatworm-control use
- Identify the flatworms as accurately as possible.
- Siphon away large visible aggregations.
- Avoid simultaneous chemical flatworm treatments.
- Protect all pumps, overflows and filter intakes.
- Acclimate the Neon Slug gradually.
- Release it close to areas containing suitable flatworms.
- Monitor hunting and movement.
- Track the flatworm population over several weeks.
- Remove dying or detached flatworms when possible.
