The mat replaces loose sand where sand cannot be used. A mat cannot be ingested by accident – swallowing loose sand can cause impaction, particularly in young animals. A mat also builds up less bacteria than a loose substrate.

The texture gives the animal a firm grip, which increases its sense of security – on bare glass a reptile moves uncertainly.

The mat is sturdy, easy to lift out and can be cut to fit any terrarium. Rinse it clean when soiled or replace it as necessary. It also suits use as a quarantine substrate, because it can be cleaned quickly.
