Live adult Artemia, commonly known as brine shrimp, is a popular live food for freshwater and marine aquarium fish. The actively swimming crustaceans attract attention and encourage fish to search for and capture their food naturally.

Adult Artemia is larger than newly hatched brine shrimp and is therefore particularly suitable for juvenile and adult fish. Suitability depends on the size, mouth structure, and natural diet of the fish. Newly hatched Artemia is generally more appropriate for very small fry.

Live Artemia provides protein and natural nutrition as part of a varied diet. It is suitable for maintaining fish condition, supplementing the diet of growing fish, and conditioning breeding fish before spawning.

The constant swimming movement provides enrichment and encourages species-appropriate hunting behaviour. Live food may also encourage shy fish, newly transported specimens, and selective feeders that do not readily accept dry foods.

Artemia is suitable for tetras, barbs, bettas, gouramis, killifish, livebearers, cichlids, and discus. In marine aquariums, it can be offered to many small and medium-sized fish and other aquarium animals that capture suspended food.

Live Artemia remains active in the water column, making it accessible to fish feeding near the surface and in midwater. Circulation pumps can be reduced temporarily during feeding when necessary to allow the aquarium inhabitants to capture the food efficiently.

Adult Artemia is a supplementary food and does not replace a varied staple diet. Combine it with suitable dry foods, frozen foods, and other high-quality feeds to provide balanced nutrition.

The nutritional value of Artemia depends partly on what the crustaceans have consumed. Adult Artemia can be enriched before feeding with suitable microalgae, spirulina, or a commercial enrichment formula. Enriched Artemia should be offered soon after the enrichment period.

Before feeding, separate the Artemia from the transport water using a fine net or sieve. Rinse gently with clean water suitable for the aquarium when necessary. Avoid pouring the transport water directly into the aquarium.

Feeding

1. Check that the Artemia is alive and actively swimming.
2. Remove only the amount required for one feeding.
3. Separate the Artemia from the transport water with a fine net or sieve.
4. Rinse gently with clean aquarium-appropriate water when necessary.
5. Add a small quantity to the aquarium.
6. Feed only as much as the aquarium inhabitants consume quickly.
7. Remove visible uneaten food.
8. Use adult Artemia as supplementary food within a varied diet.

For marine aquariums, Artemia can be rinsed with clean saltwater suitable for the intended use. Do not add the package transport water to the aquarium.

Storage and delivery

Store live Artemia in a cool location according to the package and supplier instructions. Protect the portions from direct sunlight, excessive heat, and freezing. Check the condition of the Artemia before every feeding.
