Tunze Macro Algae Reactor 3182 is a high-capacity macroalgae reactor for freshwater and marine aquarium systems from 500 to 1,600 litres. Macroalgae or aquatic plants cultivated inside the reactor absorb nitrate and phosphate, enrich the water with oxygen, and provide a protected habitat for beneficial microfauna. Tunze Macro Algae Reactor 3182 provides natural nutrient control by cultivating macroalgae or aquatic plants outside the main aquarium display. The growing vegetation absorbs dissolved nutrients, including nitrate and phosphate. Regular harvesting removes the captured nutrients from the aquarium system.

The reactor is particularly suitable for marine and reef aquariums where biological nutrient export is used alongside protein skimming, water changes, and mechanical filtration. It can also be used in freshwater systems with suitable aquatic plants.

Natural nitrate and phosphate control

Marine aquarium nitrate and phosphate originate from fish metabolism, decomposing food, and organic waste. Macroalgae use these compounds for growth and convert dissolved nutrients into removable plant biomass.

Chaetomorpha, commonly called spaghetti algae, is an excellent choice for marine use. The loose-growing algae is easy to harvest and does not normally attach firmly to reactor surfaces.

Nutrients are permanently removed only when part of the algae growth is harvested. Leave enough healthy algae inside the reactor to continue active growth.

Rotating algae culture

Adjustable water circulation keeps the algae culture moving. Movement exposes different parts of the algae to the light and nutrient-rich water, helping prevent the centre of the culture from remaining permanently shaded.

The flow rate is adjustable from 1,000 to 2,400 l/h. Select the output according to the amount and density of the algae. The ideal flow creates gentle movement without compressing the culture against the reactor walls.

Dual refugium lighting

The package includes two LED eco chic refugium 8831 lights. Each light consumes 9 W, providing a combined lighting output of 18 W.

Lighting from opposite sides improves coverage and supports balanced growth. In marine aquariums, the reactor is often illuminated on a reverse schedule to the display aquarium. Night-time photosynthesis may help reduce daily pH variation.

Macroalgae also benefits from a dark period. Adjust the schedule according to algae growth, colour, nitrate, and phosphate measurements.

Zooplankton refuge

The algae culture creates a protected habitat for copepods, amphipods, and other beneficial organisms. Some of the multiplying microfauna may return to the display aquarium and provide natural food for fish and corals.

Shake harvested algae in reactor water before removal to help retain the beneficial organisms inside the system.

Freshwater applications

Macro Algae Reactor 3182 can also cultivate suitable freshwater plants. Najas guadalupensis can be used to absorb nutrients in heavily stocked freshwater systems, including cichlid aquariums.

Select the plant according to water temperature, hardness, pH, and nutrient levels. Regular harvesting removes nutrients in the same way as harvesting marine macroalgae.

Internal or external placement

The reactor can be installed inside a sump or next to the aquarium system. External installation requires carefully secured and leak-free tubing.

The reactor measures 310 × 250 × 430 mm. Allow additional clearance above the unit for opening the lid and harvesting algae, together with sufficient side clearance for both lights.

Included electronic pump

Comline Pump 2500 electronic provides adjustable circulation through the reactor. Pump power consumption ranges from approximately 10 to 31 W according to the selected output.

Turbelle Controller basic 7090.200 makes it possible to adapt circulation as the algae culture grows. Clean the pump intake, impeller, and motor chamber regularly.

Controlled nutrient reduction

The objective is not necessarily to reduce nitrate and phosphate to zero. Corals, aquarium animals, and beneficial microorganisms require balanced nutrient availability.

If nutrient removal becomes excessive, reduce the lighting duration, algae mass, or water flow. If nutrients remain elevated, increase the lighting duration, circulation, or healthy algae biomass gradually.

Installation and use

  1. Select a stable, level, and water-resistant location.
  2. Reserve at least 310 × 250 mm of floor space.
  3. Leave sufficient clearance above the reactor.
  4. Allow side clearance for both lights.
  5. Install the pump, controller, and tubing according to the instructions.
  6. Avoid sharp bends and compressed tubing.
  7. Test every connection before continuous operation.
  8. Add a clean and healthy starter algae culture.
  9. Begin with moderate pump output.
  10. Adjust the flow until the algae moves gently.
  11. Install the lights on opposite sides.
  12. Begin with a moderate lighting period.
  13. Monitor nitrate, phosphate, and algae growth.
  14. Harvest the algae when the reactor begins to fill.
  15. Clean the reactor, pump, and tubing regularly.
  16. Disconnect all electrical equipment before maintenance.
