Pond Excavation and Groundwork – Shelves, Planting Zones and Protective Underlay

Pond excavation is one of the most important stages of building a garden pond. Proper groundwork affects the durability, appearance, and long term functionality of the entire pond. Many common problems such as liner damage, unstable edges, or poor plant growth can often be traced back to inadequate preparation during the construction phase.

Before excavation begins, the shape of the pond should be carefully marked on the ground. A garden hose, rope, or marking paint can be used to visualize the layout. This planning stage also helps determine viewing angles, planting areas, and the placement of equipment such as pumps and filtration systems.

Excavation should be completed gradually by creating multiple depth levels rather than digging the entire pond to one uniform depth. These levels create shelves that provide ideal planting locations for aquatic and marginal plants while also improving the pond's natural appearance.

The shallowest shelf is typically located near the pond edge. This zone is usually between 10 and 20 centimeters deep and is ideal for marginal plants that prefer shallow water or consistently moist soil conditions.

A second planting shelf is often created at depths of approximately 20 to 40 centimeters. Many popular aquatic plants thrive within this range. This intermediate zone also provides a smooth transition between shallow and deeper areas of the pond.

Deeper planting shelves are commonly positioned between 40 and 80 centimeters. Water lilies and many other aquatic species benefit from these deeper locations. Including multiple planting levels greatly increases planting possibilities and creates a more dynamic ecosystem.

If fish will be kept in the pond, a dedicated deep zone should also be included. In northern climates such as Finland, a depth of at least 120 centimeters is generally recommended for fish ponds. This deeper area supports safer winter survival and helps maintain more stable water temperatures throughout the year.

Once excavation is complete, the entire pond area should be thoroughly inspected. Sharp stones, roots, construction debris, and other materials that could damage the liner must be removed. This step is essential regardless of whether EPDM pond rubber or PVC pond liner will be used.

A protective underlay or filter fabric should then be installed. This layer is often overlooked, but it plays a critical role in extending the lifespan of the pond liner. The underlay creates a protective cushion between the soil and the liner, helping prevent punctures caused by stones, roots, or soil movement.

After the protective layer is installed, the pond liner can be carefully positioned. The material should be allowed to settle naturally into all planting shelves and depth zones. Avoid stretching the liner tightly because the weight of the water will help it conform to the final shape during filling.

As the pond fills with water, edge finishing can begin. Well finished edges are essential for achieving a professional and natural appearance. Decorative rocks, gravel, aquatic plants, and landscaping materials can all be used to conceal exposed liner edges and blend the pond into the surrounding garden.

The height of the pond edges should also be checked carefully. Low spots can allow water to escape during heavy rainfall or overflow events. Maintaining a consistent edge level helps preserve water levels and reduces maintenance requirements.

Proper pond excavation and groundwork provide the foundation for a successful garden pond. When planting shelves, depth zones, protective underlay, and edge finishing are completed correctly, the result is a durable, attractive, and healthy water feature that can be enjoyed for many years.
