Varanus indicus, commonly known as the Mangrove Monitor, is a semi-aquatic monitor lizard that inhabits tropical forests, mangrove habitats and coastal regions. It is an excellent swimmer, skilled climber and highly active predator.

Adult animals can exceed one metre in length and require significantly more space than most reptiles kept in captivity. Long-term care typically requires a very large custom-built enclosure with climbing opportunities and access to water.

The species requires high humidity, strong UVB lighting, warm basking areas and environmental enrichment to remain healthy and active.

Its diet consists of insects, fish, crustaceans, rodents and other appropriately sized prey items. A varied diet is essential for long-term health.

Due to its size, intelligence and care requirements, Varanus indicus is best suited to dedicated and experienced reptile keepers.
