A mouldable desert substrate for terrariums, Outback Red, 5 kg.

Desert soil is not pure sand but a combination of sand, decomposed granite and clay – which is what produces the layered, variously coloured formations of arid regions. Stone Desert mimics that soil.

Being mouldable is the point: lightly moisten the substrate and shape hills, tunnels, burrows and raised basking platforms. Once dry the shape holds and does not collapse, yet the animal can still dig its own burrows into it.

This gives the terrarium both a cool, humid burrow where the animal can absorb moisture through its skin while it sleeps, and a warm, raised basking area. The temperature difference between the two is what lets a reptile thermoregulate.

You can cover the whole floor with landscaped Stone Desert or shape only part of it and fill the rest with sand. The substrate can also be used to secure heavy decor items such as branches and rock formations.

Natural material with no added dyes or chemicals. It conducts heat well, so a substrate heater works through it.
