Varanus jobiensis is an impressive monitor lizard from New Guinea, recognised for its distinctive peach-coloured throat, intelligence and highly active nature. This species is recommended only for experienced reptile keepers.

Varanus jobiensis, commonly known as the Peach-throated Monitor, is a large monitor species native to New Guinea and surrounding islands. Its characteristic peach, yellow or reddish throat coloration makes it one of the most recognisable monitor species in the hobby.

This species is highly intelligent, alert and active. It spends much of its time climbing, exploring its surroundings and searching for food. Adult animals can reach approximately 120 cm in length and require substantial living space.

A suitable enclosure should provide significant height, sturdy climbing structures, strong UVB lighting, warm basking areas and high humidity. Long-term success with this species requires experience with advanced reptile husbandry.

The species feeds on insects, fish, amphibians, rodents and other appropriately sized prey items. A varied diet and proper supplementation are important for maintaining long-term health.

Due to its size, strength, activity level and demanding environmental requirements, Varanus jobiensis is best suited to experienced monitor keepers.
