The spider orchid is an epiphyte – an orchid that grows on trees – of the kind found in the canopy of tropical forests. The tall, narrow shape suits a vertical terrarium and the background of a layout.

An artificial plant needs no light, water or nutrients, so it works in the parts of the terrarium where a live plant would not survive – under a basking lamp or in a dark corner. In a quarantine terrarium, where the floor is kept bare and easy to clean, it is often the only option.
