The sand has been sifted, so impurities are removed and the grain size is even.

Why the colour matters: deserts are not all the same colour. This shade corresponds to the sand of the Gobi (Asia), the Sahara (Africa), the Kara-Kum, Kyzyl-Kum, Thar, Dasht-e Kavir, Dasht-e Lut and the Arabian Desert (South West Asia) and the Mojave (North America). A colour that matches the species' own habitat makes the terrarium convincing and shows the animal's colouring properly.

The sand conducts heat well, so it works with a heat mat. It encourages digging and also serves as an egg-laying substrate.

Desert species are adapted to strong UV radiation as well: a desert terrarium needs a light source to match, such as the Exo Terra Reptile UVB150.
