Preparing and Performing Water Changes in a Saltwater Aquarium
Water changes remain a common maintenance task in many saltwater aquariums. Although some hobbyists use methods such as Triton or DSR with reduced or even no routine water changes, understanding how to prepare and perform a proper water change is an important skill for every marine aquarist.
A poorly executed water change can create unnecessary stress for fish and corals. A well-planned water change, however, helps maintain stability and improve water quality when needed.
Planning the water change
Before starting, determine how much water you want to replace. Most hobbyists change approximately 5–15 percent of the total system volume at a time.
The amount depends on:
- aquarium size
- stocking level
- nutrient levels
- maintenance strategy
Smaller, more frequent changes are often safer than very large replacements.
Using RO DI water
High quality saltwater starts with purified freshwater. Most reef keepers use RO DI water because it removes unwanted contaminants.
Benefits include:
- no nitrate
- no phosphate
- no silicate
- consistent water quality
A clean source water foundation makes long-term maintenance much easier.
Mixing the saltwater
After preparing purified water, marine salt is added according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Important steps include:
- add salt to water
- provide strong circulation
- allow thorough mixing
Most aquarists mix saltwater in a separate container using a pump.
Many prepare the water at least several hours, or even a full day, before use.
Checking salinity
Salinity should closely match that of the aquarium before performing the change.
Differences in salinity can cause:
- stress to fish
- coral irritation
- reduced stability
A refractometer or digital salinity meter should always be used to verify accuracy.
Matching temperature
The new saltwater should also match the aquarium temperature.
This is usually achieved using:
- an aquarium heater
- a circulation pump
- a thermometer
Matching temperature helps minimize stress during the process.
Performing the water change
Once the new saltwater is fully prepared, the change can begin.
A typical process includes:
- turning off selected equipment if needed
- removing the desired amount of old water
- slowly adding the new water
- restarting equipment
Adding water gradually helps avoid sudden environmental changes.
Maintenance during water changes
Water change sessions are also a good opportunity to perform routine maintenance.
Common tasks include:
- removing detritus
- cleaning filter media
- emptying skimmer cups
- scraping algae from glass
Combining these tasks improves overall efficiency.
Monitoring after the change
After the water change, inspect the system carefully.
Check:
- temperature
- salinity
- water level
- equipment operation
Observing fish and corals can also reveal whether the transition was smooth.
