The barrel cactus is a low, rounded cactus of the kind found in the deserts of North America and Mexico. The small size suits a nano or mini terrarium or the foreground of a larger one.

An artificial plant needs no light, water or nutrients, so it works in the parts of the terrarium where a live plant would not survive – under a basking lamp or in a dark corner. In a quarantine terrarium, where the floor is kept bare and easy to clean, it is often the only option.

The plant is easy to wash and disinfect and can be combined with live plants. It gives the animal cover and hiding places, which reduces stress.
